Non - normative Bodies in Comic Books

Basically, writing a pape this summer on superheroes with disabilities.  Hm, I guess not mental disabilities, because I'd be sucked down by all the sociopaths (Rorschach, Deadpool, The Punisher...).  Anyway, physical disabilities.

So, this would include a zillion people apparently- here is a list from AllExperts with my notes in brackets []:

List of superheroes with disabilities

*Anakin Skywalker (amputated limbs, replaced by artificial limbs) [is Anakin Skywalker a superhero?  Hrml...)
*Batgirl / Cassandra Cain (mute) [Word on the street (thanks L) is that another Batgirl (Barbara Gordon) is paralyzed and returns as The Oracle.  I have Birds of Prey vol. 1 so I will definitely check it out ^_^) [BTW, I'm not counting muteness that is a choice...]
*Black Crow (paralysis) [Not going to be used- he is a-ok when superhero, only paralyzed in his alter ego state.  That's a bit problematic...]
*Black Racer (uses wheelchair) [Same as above...]
*Vera Black (amputated arms, replaced by artificial limbs) [Okay, those limbs are weapons-- since we haven't got the real tech, it would be a little sci fi esque to be relatable...]
*Cable (infected with a techno-organic virus, has a cyborg arm) [same as above]
*Claw (mute) [Can't really find much info- though I imagine it is not an inability to speak so much as a choice]
*Coldstone (cybernetic limbs) [This is an ice cream chain.  Also, see above.]
*Comedian (insanity, disfigurement) [I am not including insanity, as per the topmost note.  Though, it is strange that he didn't pop to mind right away.  Disfigurement???  When?  Oh, they must mean the scar that his baby mama gave him before he murdered her- oh dear...  Not including!]
*Cyborg (various injuries, uses prosthetics)  [Same as above...]
*Circuit Breaker (paraplegia, uses wheelchair and has special costume comprised of electronics giving her ability to access computers and to allow mobility) [I'm not sure-- very sci fi-y..]
*Dr. Curt Connors (multiple personalities) [Interesting but NO!]
*Daredevil (blindness) [One of the first I thought of!]
*Dark Angel (seizures) [Can't find this info on the Wiki-- will have to do more research]
*Darkdevil (formerly genetic degeneration inherited from his cloned father, currently multiple personalities) [Not including mental-ness, oh, just see above]
*Darkman (disfigurement) [Something to consider- the fellow can't feel pain and he's a Sam Raimi character]
*Deadpool (cancer, disfigurement, amnesia, and insanity) [Deadpool is confusing- I'll have to think about tackling him- that's what she said..]
*Doctor Mid-Nite (blindness) [He's only blind in the light- that's just not easy to relate to real-ness...]
*Echo (deafness) [Really interesting- I will need to research her further.  Her costume has a white hand print across her face!]
*Elektra (OCD) [See above]
*Extraño () [Apparently Extraño actually ^^*a "fictional gay Hispanic magician" Oh dear..  Gah! HIV positive.  What is this character? Obviously must look into this further.]
*Eyes Only / Logan Cale (spinal trauma, uses wheelchair)  [I need to see this show
*Forge (amputated limbs, replaced by artificial limbs) [See above]
*Ghost Rider (multiple personalities) [See above]
*Hawkeye (deafness, uses hearing aid) [Not sure how I feel- he's super before the hearing loss and a sci fi aid makes him able to hear]
*Hulk (multiple personalities) [See above]
*Hybrid (paralysis, requires symbiote in order to walk.)[see above]
*Ian Nottingham (amnesia) [SA]
*Invisible Woman/Malice (multiple personalities) [SA]
*Iron Man (heart damage requires chest plate from armor to keep heart going) [SA]
*John Hartigan (heart condition) [LOOK INTO MORE- the pain affects his work]
*John Jameson (multiple personalities) [SA]
*Kaine (deformities caused by cloning procedure, mentally unstable) [Considering...]
*Kratos (persistent nightmares, borderline insanity)[SA]
*Luke Skywalker (amputated hand, cyborg replacement) [SA]
*Marv (medicated for some mental condition / insanity) [SA]
*Mia Dearden/Speedy () [HIV positive]
*Miho (possibly mute) [Choice or impossibility?]
*Misty Knight (missing an arm, replaced by an artificial limb) [SA]
*Nick Fury (missing an eye) [oh, I forgot about him...]
*Normie Osborn (acrophobia, insanity) [Normie?  SA]
*Oracle (paralysis, uses wheelchair) [Already being considered :)]
*Kiddy Phenil (dismembered, rebuilt cyborg body) [Holy crap!  I don't remember this character at all ^^*]
*Phoenix / Jean Grey / Ultimate Marvel Girl (multiple personalities (due to the nature of her powers)) [SA]
*Professor X (paraplegia)[I always forget about him- see, how come his friends don't make him able to walk when they have the abilities?  Very strange.]
*Rogue (multiple personalities (due to the nature of her powers))[SA]
*Rorschach (insanity)[SA]
*Scarlet Witch (insanity)[SA]
*Scream (schizophrenia)[SA]
*Spawn (disfigurement) [The whole going to hell and coming back as a demon spawn thing may be hard to relate to...]
*Spider-man (post-The Other, missing an eye, uses synthetic; in the MC2 alternate future, is missing a leg, uses prosthetic) [SA]
*Storm (claustrophobic)[SA]
*Super Women (disfigurement)[Um.... have to find this more]
*Venom (cancer, insanity) [Venom is way too confusing as a symbiotic host-taking life form...]
*Wiz Kid (dyslexia, mobility impairments, uses wheelchair) [Someone to consider]
*Wolverine (amnesia) [Also chronic pain- I'm not positive, but doesn't his skin tear every time the claws come out?]

Also Penance-- chronic pain.  He needs pain to use his powers (was Speedball).

A lot to think about!!
